East Street, Colchester

Monitoring the unique buildings on Colchester’s historic East Street.

A row of pink, white, blue, and brown terraced houses on a road.

The ancient East Gate of Colchester, once an important approach road to the city, and former shops of the area, are an important part of our history. Working closely with Colchester Civic Society over many years, North Essex Heritage helped to monitor and protect the area.

The shops include the former Charles Brown and Sons hardware store in East Street. The 14th century building, which was once one of Colchester’s grandest, had at one stage been on the point of collapse. It has since been converted into homes.
